Meningococcal disease is caused by bacteria. Although uncommon, it can become very serious, very quickly. Adolescents are at increased risk of meningococcal disease and are more likely to spread the disease to others.
The Meningococcal ACWY vaccine is being offered free by the Victorian Government, to adolescents in Years 10, 11 and 12 at school, as well as those adolescents not in secondary school but of an equivalent age (15 – 19 years).
Since 2014 the meningococcal W strain has increased across Australia, and is now the predominant strain in Victoria.
This free program will run until December 31, 2017
